Coffee shops of New York

New York has a lot to offer for caffeine addicts and these were our favourite independent coffee parlours.

Culture Espresso Bar

Cup detail at Culture Espresso Bar.

A small venue that can get really busy, but worth it if you find yourself in the area. Try a flat white and don’t miss their chocolate chip cookies which is baked on-site and served warm out of the oven. They have two locations in Manhattan, Culture 36 (where we went to) on 247 W 36th St and another on 72 West 38th St.

Kaffe 1668

Kaffe 1668 coffee shop.

A quirky place (tiny little sheep everywhere!) and friendly staff. They have three shops across the city and we went to 275 Greenwich Street. Their other shops are at 401 Greenwich Street and 530 5th Avenue.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters

Stumptown Coffee Roasters is quickly becoming very mainstream, but still you can’t go wrong here if you’re after a great coffee. Be prepared to stand in line as they get seriously busy. We mostly went to the 18 W 29th St shop (adjoining the Ace Hotel), but they have another shop on 30 W 8th St (a short walk to/from Washington Square Park).

Blue Bottle Coffee

Blue Bottle Coffee at 1 Rockefeller Plaza.

Another Oakland export and you’re likely to bump straight into one of their shops as they have seven all over New York. We went to their outlet at the Rockefeller Center which was, as expected, extremely busy. They have two serving points and service is really fast. Don’t forget to check out the cool coffee brewing ‘paraphernalia’ in the display cabinets on the far wall!

Underline Coffee
The cosy interior of Underline Coffee shop.
A small venue right under the High Line (511 W 20th St). We stumbled upon this perfect little coffee shop when we did the High Line. Easygoing vibe and friendly folk serving great coffee.
